Attorney Owes $20,000 for Frivolous Amendment of Race Bias Suit

A Massachusetts attorney was properly sanctioned for continuing to pursue frivolous allegations against a town of Brookline board member as part of a race discrimination suit for a Black firefighter, the First Circuit ruled.

That Gerald Alston was granted leave to amend his allegations against Stanley Spiegel didn’t “immunize” attorney Brooks A. Ames against sanctions because the amended allegations were still frivolous, the court said Tuesday.

Ames was taxed $20,397 to “deter future misconduct” after a lower court found the amendments merely recycled assertions it had previously found wholly lacking, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit said....
