Appeals Court Rejects Suit Over Girl’s Suicide After Bullying

An Alabama school district and four of its officials were properly granted summary judgment on several deliberate indifference claims, the Eleventh Circuit ruled, after the death by suicide of a nine-year-old student who had allegedly been bullied because of her race and gender.

McKenzie Adams attended U.S. Jones Elementary, part of the Demopolis City Schools in Alabama. From August to December 2018 McKenzie was allegedly bullied by a fourth-grade classmate and others who wrote notes or directed racial slurs and other derogatory terms toward her, the US Appeals Court for the Eleventh Circuit said.
