Patent Office Prototyped AI for Examiners, But With Pitfalls

Patent and trademark examiners ran into technical problems and other obstacles in early experiments with using artificial intelligence, but such tools still hold the promise of helping them do their jobs better, an independent federal report shows.

The agency has been exploring development of AI tools to help examiners analyze patent and trademark applications, as part of director Andrei Iancu’s push to ensure patents and trademarks can survive legal challenges.
