Patent Applications Down as PTO Projects Virus-Linked Dip in 2021

Fewer patent applications were filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the first part of 2021, as businesses felt the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The filing rate for patent applications was down almost 7% in the first four months of the agency’s fiscal year compared to the same period in 2020, PTO leader Drew Hirshfeld said Thursday at a meeting of the Patent Public Advisory Committee.

“This was expected and, quite frankly, our numbers are tracking very close to what our projections were,” he said.
