Nuro Self-Driving Car Scores California Regulator Approval

Self-driving robot start-up Nuro Inc. can now test grocery-delivery vehicles on California roads without a driver behind the wheel, making it the second company to get a permit allowing such trials from the safety-conscious state.

Nuro, founded by ex-Alphabet Inc. employees and backed by SoftBank Vision Fund, wants to use its robots to deliver groceries bought online. The permit allows the company to test two driverless robots on designated streets in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties, the California Department of Motor Vehicles said in a statement.
