How IRS Bought Mobile Data Raises Concern Over Agencies’ Use

A Treasury Department watchdog’s review of legal concerns with Internal Revenue Service use of mobile phone location data sold by marketers casts doubt on other government agencies’ use of such data without a warrant.

In a letter made public Monday, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration questioned if the IRS needs a warrant to use data from broker Venntel Inc., which gathers location information from the marketing industry.
