Google Moves Genius Lyric Display Suit to Brooklyn Federal Court

Genius Media Group can’t “sidestep” copyright law by suing Google LLC in state court instead of federal court for displaying lyrics from its website, Google told a Brooklyn federal court Dec. 30.

Google called Genius’s state suit “a subterfuge for copyright claims that Plaintiff does not have standing to bring,” because Genius doesn’t own copyrights in the lyrics. Google filed to remove the case to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Google also says it properly licensed the lyrics from “their rightful owners.”
