FCC Waives Wireless Location Requirements for Coronavirus Aid

March 31, 2020, 6:29 PM

The Federal Communications Commission is letting mobile wireless providers use subsidies outside of designated areas to aid those hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The FCC approved an order that applies to wireless providers who collectively receive about $382 million from the Universal Service Fund through a subsidy stream that is gradually being phased out. The order allows the companies to use the funds outside service areas previously established by the FCC.

“We must provide companies with flexibility to meet the fast-changing needs in their communities during this crisis,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement.
