FCC to Require Companies Route Texts to Suicide Prevention Line

Phone service providers will be required to route texts sent to 988 to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the Federal Communications Commission said Thursday.

The commission earlier designated 988 as the 3-digit dialing code for phone calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which offers suicide prevention and mental health support services.

The FCC unanimously voted to pass the measure directing texts to the lifeline during its monthly meeting.
