FCC Restores Trump-era Rules Easing Media Ownership

The FCC restored rules easing media ownership restrictions, following a recent Supreme Court order that sided with Trump-era deregulation.

The Federal Communications Commission’s June 4 order enables broadcasters to have more leeway to purchase or swap stations in local markets, as well greenlighting media companies to own both a newspaper and TV station in the same market.

The agency, under the Trump administration, sought to remove some ownership restrictions that had been in place for decades to ensure competition and diversity of voices. But the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit struck down the agency’s proposed changes.
