Musk Battles Billionaires Over Future of Dish Satellite Airwaves

The Federal Communications Commission is considering opening up a swath of satellite airwaves to serve 5G networks, escalating a regulatory feud pitting Elon Musk’s Space Exploration Technologies Corp. against Dish Network Corp. and a telecom company funded by Michael Dell.

The agency announced late Tuesday it adopted a notice seeking public comment on whether the 12 GHz spectrum band, currently reserved for satellite services and limited terrestrial broadband services, is suitable to handle 5G data traffic.

The push comes as the FCC continues to look for additional spectrum, a finite and often-contested resource, that can fuel ultra-fast broadband networks.
