FCC Considering Stronger Data Breach Reporting Rules for Carriers

Federal Communications Commission chair Jessica Rosenworcel is circulating a proposal to implement stronger data breach reporting requirements on telecommunications carriers.

The notice for proposed rulemaking would strengthen the process of notifying customers and federal law enforcement agencies of data breaches and align the FCC’s reporting requirements with recent data breach law developments in other sectors, the agency said in an announcement Wednesday.

“Customers deserve to be protected against the increase in frequency, sophistication, and scale of these data leaks, and the consequences that can last years after an exposure of personal information,” Rosenworcel said in the announcement.
