Broadcasters Push FCC to Lift Cap on TV Station Ownership

A federal cap on owning top-rated, local TV stations that was weakened two years ago would disappear entirely if broadcast industry leaders get their way.

The National Association of Broadcasters, Nexstar Media Group Inc., Gray Television Inc., and other companies are pushing the Federal Communications Commission to eliminate a decades-old rule banning companies from owning more than one, top-four-rated station in the same market. Such a move, they say, would help them compete for advertising dollars with cable providers and tech giants such as Facebook Inc. and Netflix Inc. that have transformed the TV landscape.
