The Boeing Co. won permission from U.S. regulators for a fleet of 147 communications satellites, following Elon Musk’s SpaceX in a new rush to offer commercial services from low orbits in space.
The Federal Communications Commission approved the constellation in an order released Wednesday. Boeing plans to provide broadband and communications services for residential, commercial, institutional, governmental, and professional users in the U.S. and globally, the FCC said.
Boeing in its application told the FCC it could “provide high speed broadband communications to consumers wherever they are located.”
The company thanked the FCC in an emailed statement.
