Our Spotlight series highlights the careers and lives of tax professionals across the globe. This week’s Spotlight is on former IRS Revenue Officer Michael Raanan.
At age 22, Raanan flew across the country to begin working as a Revenue Officer at the IRS. Almost a decade later, he started Landmark Tax Group and has since been Florida-based providing high-quality, professional tax relief to those with back taxes.
What’s your official title, and what does it mean? Officially, I’m the founder and president of Landmark Tax Group. Unofficially, I’m whatever my clients and team need me to be—serving them and our other stakeholders are my passion and privilege.
Free time: book, audiobook, or podcast? I’m a big believer in consuming information and being a lifetime learner. In addition to the usual podcasts I follow, lately, I’ve been catching up on classics from Xenophon, Socrates, and Dante.
Tax is a huge subject. What’s your area of special interest? For the last 17 years, I’ve specialized exclusively in IRS back taxes. Helping taxpayers make sense of the IRS and showing them how to favorably resolve their tax debt has been extremely rewarding. This past year, we celebrated a milestone of $150 million in resolved back taxes.
What’s the last movie or show that you watched and loved (DVD, Netflix, or in the theater)? The show “Billions” was highly entertaining, although I’m positive the IRS would want a word or two with the lead character.
What college did you attend, and what did you study? I attended Florida State University for undergrad and the University of Phoenix for grad school. Both business curriculums were instrumental in laying the foundation for success with Landmark Tax Group.
Go to pick-me-up: coffee or tea? I couldn’t survive without WATER. It’s important to stay hydrated when going head-to-head with the IRS on behalf of our clients.
What’s the best tax or financial advice that anyone ever gave you? Earn it, keep it, invest it ... and wealth will follow.
If you weren’t working in the tax profession, what would your dream job be? Cultivating the full potential of my kiddos full time.
If you had the opportunity to make one change in the tax world—an extra credit, a disallowed deduction, whatever—what would it be? No income tax on the first $150,000 of earned income.
Favorite food, snack, or candy during tax season or other busy time? Protein shakes help to keep my energy up. One recipe: almond milk, banana, avocado, chia seeds, almond butter, and protein powder.
What tax news or move made the most impact on your practice or clients this past year? Tax resolution season is all year round, however, the pandemic has caused an even bigger demand for reliable tax assistance. We’ve been busier than ever helping taxpayers resolve their IRS debt.
If you received a big tax refund check right now, what would you do with it? Keep it and invest it!
