Wastewater Upgrades to Aid Neglected Alabama County, Other Areas

Lowndes County, Ala., and nearly a dozen other communities lacking basic wastewater treatment will finally see help under a pilot effort launched Tuesday and funded through the bipartisan infrastructure package.

The Closing America’s Wastewater Access Gap Community Initiative will accelerate efforts to help an estimated 2.2 million people in the US who lack running water and indoor plumbing, according to the EPA and Agriculture Department, which are spearheading the effort.

The federal agencies will focus on 11 communities in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, and West Virginia, and two tribal areas.
