Washington State Loses Case Over $1 Immigrant Detainee Pay (2)

The state of Washington can’t sue the private operator of an immigrant detention center over a program that pays immigrants only $1 a day for working at the facility, a federal judge held in a preliminary decision.

In a change of course from an earlier decision, Judge Robert J. Bryan of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington Sept. 24 said governmental immunity rules prevent the state from suing the GEO Group Inc. because of its status as a federal contractor.
