Schools Misinterpret American Indian Team Mascot Ban, Group Says

A group challenging a Colorado law that bars public schools and colleges from using American Indian mascots told a federal court that the refusal of two high schools to consider adopting the name of historical American Indian figures is enough to show that the law is injuring them.

Although the law doesn’t preclude schools from adopting the names of historical figures, the legislature drafted the statute “so poorly that public schools and school districts cannot discern its meaning,” plaintiff Native American Guardian’s Association told the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado Nov. 26.
