Federal Trade Commission nominee Alvaro Bedoya advocated for greater scrutiny of facial recognition technology’s privacy impacts during a Senate Commerce Committee nomination hearing.

Bedoya, who has criticized law enforcement use of the technology, said at the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation hearing he supports other uses like identity verification, as long as data is collected transparently and with people’s permission.
