California Sports Betting Foes Agree to Remove Ballot Statement

A campaign to defeat a California tribal sports betting initiative agreed to withdraw from a voter’s guide a statement from an NAACP member, the campaign’s spokeswoman said Friday.

California voters this fall will consider Proposition 26, a ballot measure to allow sporting match wagers at Indian casinos. It was endorsed by the Black civil rights organization.

However, longtime NAACP member Minnie Hadley-Hempstead urged a ‘no’ vote in a statement because gambling addictions “often lead to ruined finances, relationships, even homelessness and crime.” That quote was set to appear in the Nov. 8 general election’s voter guide.
