SEC Braces for Government Shutdown That Could Limit Enforcement (2)

The SEC could stay open for business in the event of a federal government shutdown and continue its enforcement work as usual for a limited time.

The Securities and Exchange Commission only has enough money to operate with a full staff until the end of Dec. 26 if there is a shutdown, the agency said in a statement posted on its website. The agency on Dec. 27 then would have “only an extremely limited number of staff members available to respond to emergency situations involving market integrity and investor protection, including law enforcement,” it said.
