Weighted Workplace Safety Inspections to Begin

Starting Oct. 1, the Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration will begin using a new method to measure how many inspections are conducted annually—the “enforcement weighting system,” agency administrator David Michaels said Sept. 29.

Instead of counting only individual inspections, OSHA also will break down each inspection into “enforcement units,” Michaels said. Complicated inspections, such as those involving multiweek process safety management checks at oil refineries or measuring chemical exposure, will have higher enforcement unit counts than construction site inspections that take a couple of hours.
