SEC Eyes Inconsistent Outside Review of ESG Reporting

SEC officials are considering to what degree companies are paying an outside party to review their sustainability reports as the regulator weighs expanded disclosure rules.

Even though many of the world’s largest companies pay third-party providers to verify their environmental, social and governance reporting, the nature of such ESG reviews varies, Paul Munter, acting chief accountant to the Securities and Exchange Commission, said Monday in remarks to an accounting conference.
