Potential Coronavirus Vaccine’s Development Has Started

A potential vaccine against the spreading coronavirus could reach human testing by April, according to the NIH’s infectious disease chief.

Past Practice: Health officials’ “considerable experience” with coronaviruses like SARS is “helping us very rapidly get a jump on things with regard to this new virus,” Anthony S. Fauci, director of the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, says. If the first phase of trials is successful, NIH will likely move on to larger trials to test whether the vaccine is safe and effective for FDA approval.
