OSHA Gives Workplace Criminal Cases, Falls Greater Weight

Federal safety inspections involving criminal investigations and often-fatal hazards such as excavations and falls have greater importance in OSHA’s new method for tracking enforcement and other efforts.

By weighting inspections, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration encourages its field offices to pursue difficult cases, and not just count inspections.

The new system “underscores the importance of complex enforcement activity focused on the most hazardous workplaces and operations,” OSHA’s acting director for enforcement, Patrick Kapust, said in a Sept. 30 memorandum.

Bloomberg Law obtained the OSHA memorandum detailing the program through a Freedom of Information Act request.
