Obama-Era Mine Safety Rule Could Face Another Delay

Speculation is running high among mining attorneys and activists that the Trump administration will push back—for a second time—an Obama-era mine safety rule before it takes effect early next month.

The fact that the administration hasn’t released compliance guidance ahead of an Oct. 2 effective date for the rule is reinforcing views that a delay is in the works.

That would cheer hardrock mining companies, which have argued that the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s final rule (RIN:1219-AB87) is impractical and would do very little to make mines safer. The rule requires operators to conduct safety inspections...
