Naval Contractor Wrongly Fired Guard Over Complaint, NLRB Rules

A military contractor illegally fired a security guard for raising concerns about the company’s alleged failure to comply with naval regulations for firearm certification, the National Labor Relations Board ruled.

Mark Salopek, who worked for Xcel Protective Services Inc. at a US Navy facility near Seattle, was protected by federal labor law when he complained to the Navy about the company’s weapons certification process, the majority on a three-member NLRB panel said Thursday. Salopek’s communications were covered because they related to workplace safety, the panel’s two Democrats said.
