MSHA Issues Abandoned Mines Safety Alert

Following the recovery of a pair of bodies at an abandoned mine in eastern Texas, the Mine Safety and Health Administration issued a May 31 safety alert on the dangers of abandoned mines.

Two individuals aged 20 and 19 were found April 28 in an area known as the “clay pits” in Harrison County, Texas, according to the federal agency.

Dozens of people are injured or killed annually while exploring or playing on mine property, according to the alert.
