Mine Safety Agency Calls for More Information on Silica Effects

A federal agency’s first step to regulate miners’ exposure to silica—and potentially decrease their chances of getting black lung disease—doesn’t go nearly far enough, mine safety experts say. Mine operators, on the other hand, applauded the agency action.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration submitted a request for information to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs July 31 to “solicit information and data on the best and most feasible ways to protect miners’ health from exposure to quartz in respirable dust, including an examination of an appropriately reduced permissible exposure limits.”
