Michigan will begin vaccinating workers in the agriculture and food processing sector on March 1, moving the group months ahead of other industries on the state’s vaccination priority list.
The shift, announced by state health officials Monday, puts Michigan’s timing ahead of regional agricultural giants Ohio and Indiana, which continue to focus mostly on vaccinating the elderly, teachers, and those with disabilities. The change came after requests from labor and food industry groups.
“Workers in higher risk agricultural settings have been adversely impacted by this pandemic,” Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Michigan’s chief medical executive, said in a release.
