Manslaughter Charges Filed in Maine Roofer’s Fatal Fall

Manslaughter charges were brought against a Maine contractor for the December death of a roofer who allegedly fell because he wasn’t wearing fall protection gear.

The grand jury indictment, released April 10 by the Maine Attorney General’s Office, is a rare case where prosecutors from any jurisdiction have sought criminal charges for an on-the-job death.

Shawn Purvis, owner of Purvis Home Improvement in Saco, Maine, is charged with criminally negligent manslaughter, which carries a maximum prison term of 30 years, and a lesser charge of workplace manslaughter, punishable by up to five years in prison.
