Forklift Safety to Get Facelift on 50-Year-Old Mandates

Companies operating forklifts would no longer be expected to follow safety guidance written 50 years ago if changes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is considering are put in place.

OSHA in a proposal released March 8 said it wants to update its rule for forklifts and similar small vehicles used to move material at factories, warehouses, and construction sites. The agency is asking for suggestions and comments on which changes to make (RIN:1218-AC99).

That means employers may get updated directions for driver training, seatbelt use, navigating ramps and other sloped areas, and protecting drivers from falling objects.
