Fines Increase 1 Percent for Workplace Safety Violations

Employers will face higher maximum fines for worker safety and health violations in 2017, though at just a 1 percent increase, employers shouldn’t see much of a difference from current fines.

Fines from the OSHA and MSHA actually increased a fraction higher than 1 percent—1.01636 percent to be exact, the Department of Labor said in a final rule set to appear in the Jan. 18 Federal Register (RIN:1290-AA31).

The higher fines became effective Jan. 13 and can be applied to alleged violations cited after that date, even if the alleged violation occurred earlier, the rule said.
