Federal Workplace Injury Survey Directly Contacts Employees

Instead of depending on reports from employers for workplace injury and illness data, the Bureau of Labor Statistics is launching a pilot program to directly survey workers about on-the-job medical problems.

The survey will likely be conducted in 2017. Details such as the questions to be asked are still being refined, BLS representatives said during presentations June 15 and 17 to safety and statistical experts.

The household survey is part of BLS’s efforts to determine how much the agency’s annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) undercounts medical issues workers experience because of their jobs.
