Federal Mine Regulators Defend Settlement With American Coal

American Coal Co. and mining regulators both said an administrative law judge doesn’t need more evidence to sign off an a settlement that would lower the coal company’s safety fines by a third.

The Labor Department’s Mine Safety Division said revealing that information to an administrative law judge reviewing the settlement would damage its case should it ever go to court.
