Exxon Must Provide Info on Acid Tank Near Explosion (Corrected)

Exxon Mobil Corp. must turn over information related to a tank filled with hydrofluoric acid at the site of a 2015 oil refinery explosion and release of hydrocarbons in Torrance, Calif., after the Ninth Circuit found the request was within the Chemical Safety and Hazard Board’s authority to investigate the incident.

The court rejected Exxon Mobil’s argument that the requests exceeded the board’s subpoena authority because it isn’t relevant to the cause of the release.

Exxon argued that the requests are barred because there was no damage to the tank or release of hydrofluoric acid.
