EPA Withdraws Obama-Era Uranium Rule to Protect Groundwater

The Environmental Protection Agency is withdrawing a proposed rule that would protect groundwater from byproducts produced from a common form of uranium mining.

The Obama administration proposed the rule on President Barack Obama’s last full day in office, Jan. 19, 2017.

The EPA announced Oct. 19 that it has found no health or safety justification for the proposed rule and that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has successfully regulated in situ leach uranium mines for 40 years.
