Defense Department Called on to Revamp Solvent Exposure Process

A national science group is calling on the Defense Department to change the way it determines worker exposure limits to a carcinogenic degreasing agent called Trichloroethylene, or TCE.

Often used in refrigerant manufacturing and in spot removers and adhesives, TCE is commonly used as a solvent at many industrial and government facilities. It can affect the liver, kidneys, neurological system, immune system, and reproductive organs, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine issued a report Nov. 15 recommending “strengthening the transparency and rigor of the Defense Department’s review process,”...
