California Wildfires Prompt Worker Smoke-Protection Proposal

Workers in California would have to be issued air-filtering masks or protected by building ventilation systems on days when air quality is unhealthy under an emergency rule proposed by the state’s workplace safety agency.

The proposed rule, released April 15, aims to protect indoor and outdoor workers. It was prompted by California’s two consecutive years of wildfires that spread soot and smoke particles across much of the state.

A hearing on the proposed rule with the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) is set for May 8 in Oakland.
