Abrasives Manufacturers Vie for Influence in Beryllium Rollback

OSHA is facing pressure from coal slag producers, shipyards, and labor groups concerned about how a pending rollback of regulations to protect workers from a toxic metal will impact workers’ health and companies’ bottom lines.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued a proposed rule June 23 that would revoke the “ancillary provisions” for controlling worker exposure to beryllium in the construction and maritime sectors. Exposure to the industrial metal can trigger chronic or acute beryllium disease, and lung cancer, according to OSHA.
