Abrasives Manufacturers Target Competitors’ Beryllium Safety Claims

Glass abrasives touted as having no beryllium may actually contain the toxic metal at levels violating federal law, according to a study backed by coal-based abrasive producers that face challenges competing with the glass industry.

But the glass industry is challenging the Jan. 12 study. In fact, air sampling at glass-based EHS Abrasives in Norfolk, Va., found “zero detectable beryllium,” plant manager Bronce Henderson told Bloomberg Environment.
