Woman’s Shock Therapy Memory-Impairment Suit Partly Advances

A woman who alleges she suffers from permanent memory loss caused by multiple rounds of shock therapy may pursue a narrowed suit against Somatics LLC, maker of the device used for her treatment, a federal court in Missouri said.

Janelle Schnulle underwent 33 sessions of Electroconvulsive Therapy, with a Thymatron System IV device, at a hospital in St. Louis.

The ECT caused permanent neurological damage that has impaired her ability to learn, retain, and recall information, Schnulle alleges.

Schnulle’s strict liability claims withstand dismissal, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri said Jan. 21.
