Whirlpool Accused in Lawsuit Over London’s Grenfell Tower Fire

Whirlpool Corp. was accused in a lawsuit of making products that contributed to a 2017 fire at Grenfell Tower in London that killed 72 people.

  • The suit, filed June 11 in Philadelphia’s Court of Common Pleas, also names Arconic Inc. and Saint-Gobain Corp.
  • The fire started when a Whirlpool fridge-freezer malfunctioned, causing its plastic backing to ignite, the complaint says
  • Arconic manufactured “highly combustible cladding” and Saint-Gobain’s Celotex produced “highly combustible insulation” used in the cladding, according to the complaint
  • The suit seeks to represent hundreds of victims and relatives of those killed
