Virus Prompts Feds to Ease Hand Sanitizer Transportation Rules

April 3, 2020, 2:38 PM

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration will ease some requirements for transporting alcohol-based hand sanitizers on highways, the agency announced.

  • PHMSA is providing temporary enforcement relief for small quantities and bulk packages of hand sanitizer to enable more businesses to respond to the coronavirus outbreak.
  • Companies must still follow federal requirements for packaging and labeling hand sanitizer, as well as training employees to handle the product.
  • Hazardous material transportation regulations apply because the product is considered a flammable liquid.
