A widening recall of popular foods—from Ritz crackers to Hungry Man frozen dinners—over the risk of salmonella in a whey powder ingredient raises more questions than it answers, food safety lawyers tell Bloomberg Law.
Those questions may persist now that the Food and Drug Administration warned July 24 that more recalls are possible.
No illnesses have been reported over whey powder produced by New Ulm, Minn.-based Associated Milk Producers Inc., the FDA said. But plaintiffs’ lawyer Ryan Osterholm said illness reports are likely given the breadth of the foods recalled.
