Reynolds Loses Bid to Scrap San Diego Ban on Tobacco Flavors

A San Diego ordinance banning the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol cigarettes, can stay in place because it isn’t blocked by federal law, a district court in California ruled in a suit by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and related companies.

The federal court is the latest to hold that tobacco-flavor bans are consistent with the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Ordinances in Los Angeles and Edina, Minn., that were similar to San Diego’s were upheld in August. Both decisions are being appealed.
