NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning Loses Gulf Spill Appeal (Corrected)

A $788,123 award by a claims administrator to the Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey team for economic damages stemming from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill will stand, a federal appeals court ruled.

The March 20 unpublished decision upheld a district court’s approval of a claims administrator’s award to the National Hockey League club for its spill-related expenses under a global settlement with BP over the 2010 spill.

Lightning LP, the owner of the Tampa Bay team, failed to demonstrate the lower court had abused its discretion, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit said.
