Equifax Deal Overpays Counsel at Expense of Class, Objectors Say

The class settlement over a 2017 Equifax Inc. data breach flunks basic fairness requirements and creates conflicts of interest among the 147 million class members, two objectors told the Northern District of Georgia Nov. 19.

“This case involves dozens of competing statutes that vary significantly in the amount of statutory damages available,” Ted Frank and David Watkins say in their objection. Statutory damages provided by individual state laws range from $0 to $2,000 per violation but all class members will receive the same relief under the settlement, they say.
