Ecuadorian Farm Workers Should Stay in Suit Against Chiquita

A group of Ecuadorian nationals should be allowed to pursue their portion of a sprawling chemical exposure lawsuit against Chiquita Brands International Inc., a magistrate judge recommended July 16.

Latin American farm workers say they were exposed to dibromochloropropane from the 1960s through the 1980s while working on Chiquita and Dole Food Co. banana plantations in Ecuador, Panama, and Costa Rica without gloves, respiratory masks, or other protective equipment. The workers link the DBCP exposure to a litany of illnesses they now suffer from, including cancers, reproductive disorders, and compromised renal and respiratory systems.
