Chevron Gains in Bid to Block $18 Billion
Judgment for Alleged Polluting of Rainforest

Chevron Corp. may move forward with a racketeering suit that seeks to block an Ecuadorian court’s $18.2 billion judgment in 2011 for alleged contamination of the Amazon rainforest, a federal court held July 31 (Chevron Corp. v. Donziger, S.D.N.Y., No. 1:11-cv-691-LAK).

Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York said the plaintiffs’ actions in the Ecuadorian litigation “unquestionably were tainted” but said it was too soon for the court to determine whether the judgment can be enforced under New York law.

Both sides called the ruling a victory.
